The introduction of artificial intelligence and robots into our lives accelerated with the pandemic. It opens the doors of a new era, for the world of gastronomy.

The pandemic had different effects on each sector. Undoubtedly the restaurant industry has been affected most by this period. Restaurants have gone through a challenging process, with the necessity of maintaining social distance and indoor phobia. In this period, they started to look for more creative solutions to survive in the industry. So they brought the robot waiters.

These high-tech robots not only address workforce shortages but also reduce human-to-human contact at a time when human health is under threat. One of the first examples of robots, pointing to a new era in the gastronomy industry, was the smart robot waiter who served the customers’ meals one by one by moving on the conveyor belt at the Robo Cafe in the city of Karbala. Similarly, mechanical waiters began to work at The Chinese Buffet, a chain of Chinese restaurants in the northwest of England. Royal Palace in the Netherlands, White Fox in Mosul, and Robotazia restaurant in Milton Keynes are other venues included in this list. This list seems to keep growing…

Boparan Restaurant Group announced the implementation of two service robots, currently being trialed at Slim Chickens in Guildford that opened last March 3. The robots also have infrared cameras, laser radars and sensors to ensure smooth transitions, navigation and obstacle avoidance. They are still in the testing phase, can interact with guests, take orders, and both serve meals and clear tables. If the trial proves successful, The robots will be used across BRG’s more than 100 restaurants nationwide.
