A gruyere cheese from Switzerland announced the 2022 World Champion Cheese this year.
The World Cheese Contest is the largest technical cheese, butter, and yogurt competition. This year, Swiss Gruyère, made by Michael Spycher of Mountain Dairy Fritzenhaus, has won the prize for the third time. The cheese, called Gourmino Le Gruyère AOP also, earned the World Champion title in 2020 and 2008.
The World Championship Cheese Contest, initiated in 1957, featured producers from 29 different countries. The competition submitted 932 entries, had seven of the 20 finalists and won 45 best-of-class categories. A team of 53 judges, including Michelin-starred chefs and technical experts, evaluated all applications across categories for sheep milk cheese, goat cheese, soft and hard cheese over the three-day event held in Madison.
