The Michelin Guide has developed a tool that records the number of open Michelin-starred restaurants. Starting from the 10th week of the year, the chart shows the weekly percentage of the restaurants that are open by region according to certain criteria and as they enter the first week of the year, only 36% of Michelin-starred restaurants are open.
For the last week of the year 2020 and the first week of 2021, between December 21st and January 3rd, 64% of Michelin-starred restaurants are reported to be closed. While the percentage of open restaurants in Europe drops due to the new measures taken in the UK and Switzerland, there’s also an increase in closed restaurants in the United States because of the new COVID-19 restrictions implemented in big states such as Washington. Asia still holds the record with 98% of open Michelin-starred restaurants.
