Fiber Circle (PRO), the producer responsibility organization for the South African paper and paper packaging industry, is calling on South African food producers to help raise awareness that food and beverage cartons are recyclable.
“While 68.4% of paper is recovered for recycling in South Africa, food and beverage cartons make up a small portion of this,” says Francois Marais, manager of Fibre Circle. “We want to raise awareness among South African consumers that cartons – in all shapes and sizes – can and are being recycled in the country.”
Saying that South Africans recycle approximately 1.2 million tons of paper annually, Marais said, “Imagine if we could add food and beverage cartons to this number.”
