The Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will close its doors for the first time since opening 96 years later.

Rio de Janeiro’s stately Copacabana Palace Hotel, among Brazil’s few five-star hotels, will close its doors for the first time on Friday as a result of coronavirus since its opening 96 years ago. Rio’s governor had imposed restrictions on business meetings, gatherings and going to beaches but did not close hotels. “The tourism industry is the most affected in the world and we hope soon to be able to reopen our doors,” said Belmond, the hotel’s owner. According to Skift, only the hotel’s manager and music legend Jorge Ben Jor, who lived at the hotel throughout the year, will remain while the Copacabana Palace Hotel is closed to guests.
