Protests were held in Barcelona as well as other cities and towns in Catalonia on Friday and at the weekend against the Catalan government’s decision to close all bars and restaurants for at least 15 days. Nearly 1,000 hospitality workers in Spain’s Catalan region threw eggs and plates at the front door of the Catalan government headquarters in Plaça Sant Jaume in central Barcelona on Friday, while chanting “We want to work”. While protester called themselves the endangered species, others laid eggs at the local town hall.

The new restrictions will limit bars and restaurants to only takeout or delivery. Store and gym capacities will also be limited at least until the end of the month. According to the Catalan Hospitality Association, the closure will affect nearly 30,000 businesses and result in over $ 1 billion in losses. Without government support, estimates say half of Catalonia’s restaurants could go bankrupt by the end of 2020.
