Filmmaker Suzanne Crocker, who lives just 300 km from the Arctic Circle, puts food sovereignty to the test and eliminates all grocery store food from her house. For a year, she feeds her family of five with food that can only be hunted, gathered and grown. Add three skeptical teenagers, one reluctant husband, no salt, no caffeine, no sugar and -40 temperatures. First We Eat is a documentary that reflects the creativity, resourcefulness and knowledge of Northern Canadians while celebrating our relationship with the land and nature. Suzanne wants to explore the experiences of humankind, who have been nurtured for thousands of years with purely local products, wild meat, fish and root crops. In today’s world, issues such as food safety, sustainibility, nutritional value and carbon footprint are discussed more than ever and this production brings us together with nature again.
