The Michelin Guide has developed a tool that records the number of open Michelin-starred restaurants. Starting from the 10th week of the year, the chart shows the weekly percentage of the restaurants that are open by region according to certain criteria and as they enter the last week of the year, 59% of Michelin-starred restaurants are closed.
“By creating this barometer, we want to take the pulse of global gastronomy in order to inform and build awareness of our ecosystem. We hope that this evidence will highlight a sector that radiates economically far beyond the doors of restaurants” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides.
As we approach the end of the year, the barometer shows a slight increase in the numbers. In Southern Europe, the percentage of open restaurants have increased from 35 to 51, while Northern Europe’s have decreased to 14% due to the new measures taken. In North America, the numbers dropped to 12% as it was recorded as 36% in the previous. Asia holds the record with 98% of open Michelin-starred restaurants.
