Presently, due to the Covid-19 outbreak, 79 per cent of Michelin-starred restaurants globally are closed.

The weekly revised Michelin guide barometer revealed that only 21 per cent of the 3,165 starred restaurants around the world are currently available. Nonetheless, this is a significant increase on last week, when 14 per cent served guests. All Michelin-starred restaurants stay closed in most countries, but reopenings have started in 14 regions where the guide operates, including Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Norway. Guangzhou in southern China is the only destination that included having 100 per cent of Michelin-starred restaurants opening for service at least three days a week. According to the news on The Caterer, Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin guides, said: “By creating this barometer, we want to take the pulse of global gastronomy in order to inform and build awareness of our ecosystem. Just less than 21% of the 3,165 starred restaurants around the world are currently open. We hope that this evidence will highlight a sector that radiates economically far beyond the doors of restaurants.”
